5 Ways to Promote Ransomware Security to Your Clients

Table of Contents

Ransomware has been a hot topic due to major attacks that happened this year.

Major news networks are inviting cybersecurity professionals to talk about the same types of things you tell your clients every day. Such as the importance of patch/update management, password security, and antivirus applications.

If you’re in the MSP world, then now is the perfect time to strike while the iron’s hot and promote your managed IT services, with an emphasis on security.

You can promote this from several angles, from compliance audits to everyday best practices.

If you’ve been watching the news but have been short on ideas for capitalizing on this major topic, we’ve got several ideas below you can use.

Facts & Figures to Help You

First, you want to have a few facts and figures about the rise of ransomware that you can use in your marketing.

    • The average cost to remediate ransomware doubled over the last 12 months from $761,106 to $1.85 million.
    • In the first quarter of 2021, the average ransomware demand increased 43% from the prior quarter to $220,298.

    Offer a Ransomware Risk Assessment

Point out to your clients that even large organizations aren’t as prepared as they think. Companies have had to pay a hefty ransom to attackers to get operations back up and running. Stress that it’s better to be prepared now than find out too late.

By promoting a free ransomware risk assessment, you can tie your service to the recent attacks and offer meaningful help that can earn you more MSP clients.

Emphasize the Fast Recovery Feature of Your Managed Backup

Many companies end up paying the ransom even if they have a backup because the backup hasn’t been done in a way that enables the fast recovery of systems.

Explain to the customer that recovery is a vital part of any backup tool they may be using and that full image backup allows for the fastest recovery of all ransomware-infected devices.

Promote “Fast Recovery for Less Downtime” on all your backup service marketing and tie this into the fact that a fast recovery will keep a company from having to pay the ransom just to get systems operational again.

    Offer a Ransomware Safety Webinar

With ransomware on everyone’s mind, it’s the perfect time to offer a ransomware safety webinar for SMBs. Offer to provide tips on cybersecurity basics and promote the webinar in all your digital marketing. You may even want to send out a local press release about it.

Webinars are an excellent way to capture new leads, and the fact that ransomware is in the news will promote a higher turnout than you might get during another time.

If you haven’t seen it already, check out our webinar on this topic we did back in June of this year.

Include Ransomware Tips On Customer Invoices & Newsletters

Often, the more someone sees something, the closer they get to making a decision. For example, someone may see a commercial for a cheaper mobile service 10 times before they think, “Hmmm maybe I should check that out.”

You can promote your IT security and managed services in this way by including different ransomware tips each month printed on customer invoices and in your email newsletters. You’ll be using the tactic of repetition to gently remind clients of your ability to reduce their risk, providing timely security tips, and promoting customer retention at the same time.

Syncro’s capabilities for customer invoicing and emailing make it easy to put something like this in place.

Promote Services Related to Ransomware Breaches

It’s not hard to find cases of ransomware in your local area with a Google search. Many of these will also include how the breach happened (e.g., an unpatched operating system).

Start by mentioning the attack. Highlight the reason for the attack and then explain how your company provides protections to keep that from happening.

You can start with the Colonial Pipeline attack and the lack of two important things:

    1. No multi-factor authentication
    2. Not properly closing unused cloud accounts
